Pietro Rossi (1930) is Professor Emeritus of the University of Turin. BA in Philosophy at the University of Turin (1952) followed by further studies at the Istituto italiano di Studi storici in Naples, then Milan and Heidelberg. Fellow of Rockefeller Foundation from 1959 to 1961. He began his academic career at the University of Cagliari (Sardinia), then taught for forty years, from 1967 to 2006, at the Turin University, first History of Philosophy and then Philosophy of History. In 1985 he was Max-Weber-Gastprofessor in Heidelberg, and in 1999-2000 Preisträger of the Humboldt-Stiftung.
Since 1963 he has been a member of the editorial board of Rivista di filosofia, and from 1985 to 2005 he was the editorial director. He directed the series Classici della sociologia for the Edizioni di Comunità and the two collections Scienze sociali and Filosofia for the publisher Loescher. Member of the editorial board of the Enciclopedia delle scienze sociali, published by the Istituto della Enciclopedia italiana (1991-99). Joint editorial director with Carlo A. Viano of the Storia della filosofia published by Laterza (1993-99).
National member of the Accademia delle Scienze di Torino, which he chaired from 2003 to 2006 and now again for the 2009-2012 term. Founding member of the Academia Europæa, national member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and of the Accademia di Scienze morali e politiche in Naples, corresponding member of the Istituto Lombardo.
Publications include Lo storicismo tedesco contemporaneo (Einaudi, 1956) and Storia e storicismo nella filosofia contemporanea (Lerici, 1960), as well as the collection of texts Lo storicismo tedesco (Utet, 1976); Cultura e antropologia (Einaudi, 1983); Max Weber: razionalità e razionalizzazione (Il Saggiatore, 1982, 2nd edition with the subtitle Oltre lo storicismo, 1988); Vom Historismus zur historischen Sozialwissenschaft (Suhrkamp, 1987); Max Weber. Una idea di Occidente (Donzelli, 2007); L’identità dell’Europa (Il Mulino, 2007); Avventure e disavventure della filosofia (Il Mulino, 2009). Editor of the Italian version of Wilhelm Dilthey’s Scritti filosofici 1905-1911 (Utet, 2004) and of Max Weber’s main works, from the methodological essays (Einaudi, 1958 and Edizioni di Comunità, 2001) to Economia e società (Edizioni di Comunità, 1961) and to Sociologia della religione (Edizioni di Comunità, 1982 and 2002).
