A European Army: The next step towards a federal Europe? - March 15 2017

The  concept of a European Army has become more prevalent in discussions regarding foreign policy. Since the Union’s inception, defence has remained as an intergovernmental area of policy, wherein each member state has autonomy over the running of their militaries. Centralisation of Defence conjures up major disagreement between EU sceptics and supporters, and such measures would put to the test the ability of political institutions to translate ideologies into law (Haas, E). The objective is to show how developments that have occurred since the Lisbon treaty are paving the way for a European Army, and I aim to convey how methods of Neo-functionalism explain the supranational European Union agenda to increase defence integration.
